The police murder of Sean Bell was an outrageous injustice. And it is just the tip of an iceberg of police killing and brutalizing people. Between when cops killed Amadou Diallo with 41 shots and Sean Bell with 50 shots, the NYPD killed more than 130 people! And these are only the ones we've been able to find out about. It's also been reported recently that the NYPD stopped and frisked 500,000 people in 2006 and that only 10% of those stops resulted in arrests or summons. Of those stopped and frisked, over 85% of them were Black or Latino.
And it's not just New York. Cops in Atlanta killed a 92-year old grandmother while cops in Jacksonville killed an 81-year old man; cops in Maryland killed an Iraq War veteran who was despondent over being ordered to go back to Iraq; cops in Philly shot a young man in the back who they accused of firing shots in the air to celebrate New Years day, and we could go on and on listing police killings that have happened in the past several months. There's a nationwide epidemic of police brutality and police murder. It is intolerable, and it must be stopped.
Join family and friends of Sean Bell, family members of other victims of police murder and the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality for a mass rally and speakout this Saturday. Come out and hear from those whose loved ones’ lives were stolen by those who have sworn to protect and serve. Hear testimony from people who have struggled for justice for their murdered loved ones and for all victims of police brutality and police murder.
Come out and join the struggle for justice for Sean Bell and against police brutality. Come out if you and your friends have suffered brutality and abuse at the hands of the police. Come out if you haven't suffered this kind of abuse but you think it's wrong for anyone to be subjected to it. Let the authorities know we haven't gone to sleep on this case and will accept nothing less than the cops who killed Sean Bell being indicted, convicted and jailed. Join in the struggle for justice for all the victims of police brutality and police murder.
