The controversy surrounding recent comments about the Rutgers women’s basketball team by Don Imus hit at the heart of people in New Jersey, but it has also brings to light something that has not been effectively addressed: Imus’ remarks pale in comparison to the actual promotion of hate politics in this country. To that end, One People’s Project and Residents Against Racism will be sponsoring the East Coast Anti-Hate Forum, a panel discussion featuring a number of community activists who deal with the issues surrounding race, gender, immigration, and LGBTQ rights. The Forum will take place June 16, 2007 at 12 Noon, at the Newark Public Library, 5 Washington St., Newark, NJ.

Whereas, the majority of people in the U.S. want a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq (http://www.pollingreport.com/iraq.htm);
Whereas, more than $400 billion of U.S. taxpayers’ money has been spent on this illegal, immoral war, while our communities at home suffer neglect;
Whereas, tens of thousands of Iraqis took to the streets in April, on the 4th anniversary of the fall of Baghdad, to protest continued U.S. troop presence;
Whereas, dozens, if not hundreds, of Iraqis and U.S. soldiers are dying needlessly every single day;
We, the People, demand that, instead of funding the expansion of Bush’s disastrous war and occupation in Iraq, Congress act now to:
· Fund immediate, safe withdrawal of all U.S. troops and contractors;
· Fund the care of troops and their families when they get home;
· Fund the recovery and reconstruction of the Gulf Coast and Iraq;
· Fund the needs of our communities at home.

From the call for a Peoples March
“It is time for a revolution of priorities. We must end this unjust war now and focus the energy and resources of our nation on solving our problems at home! Towards that end, this urgent call goes out to people across the nation to rise up and participate in The People’s March for Peace, Equality, Jobs, and Justice, which will take place Saturday, August 25, 2007 in Newark, New Jersey. The purpose of the march is to demand an immediate end to the U.S. war on Iraq, redirection of funding for the war towards domestic needs, and the realization of racial equality, social and economic justice in the United States”.

May Day is a day to be in the streets, reaffirming our commitment to a truly just society. It is all too easy to forget the sacrifices made by past generations to win significant improvements in the wages and working conditions that have been enjoyed by many workers in the industrialized capitalist countries. It is also a time to remember that colonialism and imperialism have kept most of the working class in the less industrialized countries in dire poverty. The spread of a globally integrated capitalist economy is further undermining the well-being of working people. As a few become grotesquely wealthy, and powerful, the many confront acute poverty and economic insecurity.
